Our Chapter

Dedication Service

The dedication service at the grave of Jonathan Hicklin.

The Peter Meyer Chapter, NSDAR, was organized on December 18, 1937.

The name was chosen to honor this American Revolutionary War Patriot who came to the United States from Germany and settled in Berks County, Pennsylvania. Peter Meyer took the Oath of Allegiance and Fidelity in 1777, to defend his country. His great-grandson, Peter, was one of the early settlers of Assumption, and it was in the home he built that the chapter was organized. The spelling of the surname had changed to Myers.

On October 10, 1965, at the Donner Cemetery two miles west of the Owaneco, the Peter Meyer Chapter, NSDAR, dedicated the monument and bronze NSDAR plaque at the grave of Jonathan Hicklin, the county's only known soldier of the American Revolution War.

Public relations has been an emphasis for the chapter. Extensive coverage keeps the public aware of the objectives and accomplishments of NSDAR and the Peter Meyer Chapter, NSDAR.

Our Community

Christian County Courthouse

Our community has a rural history with farming as its mainstay. Our members are scattered throughout Christian County as well as nearby communities in Montgomery and Sangamon counties. These include Assumption, Taylorville, Pana, Villages of Owaneco, Pawnee, Raymond, Morrisonville, Harvel, Moweaqua, Stonington, and Rochester. Of necessity, our meeting sites revolve around the communities.

Taylorville is the county seat for Christian County and is designated a “Looking for Lincoln” site since he practiced here while a lawyer and circuit rider. Founded in 1839, the entire Taylorville Square is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Between an active tourism council, chamber of commerce, and our Main Street, Inc. organization, the year is filled with activities such as cemetery walks throughout the year, Art on the Square, a chili and salsa cookoff, and a BBQ Blues and Cruise Festival, to name a few.

Patriotism abounds through activities of the many service organizations, the 4th of July parade and evening fireworks display, and Memorial Day activities at Oak Hill Cemetery.

Our proximity to Springfield and Decatur provides easy access to shopping and dining, the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, and cultural and entertainment events for everyone’s tastes.
