Special
recognition
goes to Dorotha Thackrey (Mrs. Lowell), who has won state, regional,
and national awards for her efforts with libary and literacy promotion.
She is also an active member of the American Legion Auxilliary.
Our
chapter works closely with the White County Historical Society,
which maintains the Old Graveyard in Carmi containing the grave of
Patriot William Stewart and a monument to all Revolutionary War
soldiers buried in the county. Wabash Chapter collaborates with the
society by giving tours of the Old Graveyard to fifth graders at
"Pioneer
Days," a fall field trip for county students. The event teaches
respect for cemeteries as well as history. We also work with our local
VFW and American Legion posts in fundraising events and commemorations
on Memorial and Veterans Day.
