First Brick Home Marker Placed by Springfield Chapter

Clayville Tavern Marker

1938, September 17
. Revolutionary War soldier Moses Broadwell built Sangamon County, Illinois' first brick home approximately one mile east of Pleasant Plains, on Route 125.  Moses Broadwell was in the 3rd New Jersey Regiment.  The home dates back to 1820.  A marker was unveiled by Nancy Lee Huber, great-great-great-great granddaughter of Moses Broadwell,  and Shirley Elizabeth Irwin, great-great-great-granddaughter of Moses Broadwell. A fire destroyed the structure.  It was rebuilt in 1834 by his son John Broadwell.  John was a soldier in the War of 1812.  Bricks for both houses were made on the farm.  Broadwell's Tavern, is now known as Clayville Tavern.   The Old Waubansie Indian Trail passed through there.  Stage coaches routinely stopped there and both Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas were frequent visitors.  Click the photo for a larger image.
