Our chapter is showing a lot of SPIRIT this year!  I hope you enjoy reading about the service activities in which we’re involved.

Being strongly patriotic, we support several projects for our veterans, including collecting comfort items to donate to VA hospitals and to the Stand Down for Homeless Veterans.  We also support Honor Flight Chicago,  both with monetary donations and letters for “Mail Call.”  Honor Flight is a one-day trip for WWII veterans to visit their memorial and tour the capital – at no expense to them.  We honored two special veterans when we marched in the 4th of July parade in 2010:  a WWII veteran of the Merchant Marines, and a Korean War veteran, USMC.

Our active troops are not forgotten either – we’re involved in projects that donate to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany, where our wounded troops are taken.  Members knit and donate scarves, boxes of cookies are sent, and phone cards are donated.

Signal Hill Chapter holds a Youth Awards Ceremony each year, recognizing the winners and participants of the American History Essay Contest. Two of our past student winners also were special guests in the 4th of July parade this year, who along with their mothers, carried a banner which said “Signal Hill Chapter Honors Youth Award Winners.”   A Good Citizen award is given to a high school senior from participating area high schools, along with a scholarship.  We also support education through our National Defense committee, which presents Good Citizenship medals to a student in grades 5 through 11, who fulfill the qualities of honor, service, courage, leadership and patriotism.  Signal Hill Chapter donates to DAR Schools and American Indian schools, either through monetary means or the collection of soup labels and box tops for education.

We also have several Conservation Committee projects ongoing; we honor the Constitution through display cases at the local library and the distribution of literature; we hold two genealogy workshops a year; and our monthly meetings always provide an interesting speaker and program.

We’re working very hard to fulfill the National Society’s mission to “promote historic preservation, education, and patriotism.”  Take a look at our web site – I hope you like what you see, and perhaps you qualify for membership in this wonderful service organization.
