DAR Honors Outstanding Students

The Mary Little Deere -- Fort Armstrong Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution honored eight outstanding students at a recent brunch.

The selected students were honored at the Butterworth Center. Student recognition is based on dependability, service, leadership and patriotism. The winning students responded to the essay topic, "Our American Heritage and our responsibility for preserving it."

This year's Good Citizens are:

Anne Faust attends Alleman High School and is the daughter of Dennis and Lisa Faust, Moline. She is a three-year National Honor Society member and ranks first in a class of 104 students. She is Key Club president, a four-year varsity soccer play, a member of Junior Rotarians, editor of the school newspaper and the 2010 yearbook. She is a Gilda's Club volunteer and an altar server for nine years. She plans to pursue a degree in law or business at Notre Dame.

Christina Cerny attends Rockridge High School and is the daughter of Jean and Mary Cerny, Milan. She is the senior class secretary, member of the Naitonal Honor Society, Spanish club, concert band and varsity cross country. She is active in youth ministries and participates with her father in the annual Extreme River Clean-up. She plans to pursue a double major in English and secondary education at Wheaton College and hopes to teach at the high school level.

Jenna Hohenboken attends Riverdale High School and is the daughter of Drew and Elizabeth Hohenboken, Hillsdale. She is National Honor Society president and a three-year member, served as class secretary/treasurer for four years and is a student council representative. She plans to pursue a degree in chemical engineering.

Derrick Anderson attends Rock Island High School and is the son of Derrick and Lori Anderson, Rock Island. He is ranked second in his class, is a member of the National Honor Society and recongized in "Who's Who of American English and Science students." He is a three-year varsity basketball letterman, serves as a tutor and is a mentor to other minority males. He volunteers as a youth basketball camp coach and assists the elderly at Friendship Manor. He aims to become a physician, lawyer or engineer.

Emma Williams attends Sherrard High School and is the daughter of Bob and Jennifer Williams, Sherrard. She is a member of the National Honor Society, and a four-year member of the All School Senate. She is a member of the football and basketball dance teams and marching, pep, jazz and concert bands. She is president of Sherrard Students Against Drunk Driving and tutors and teaches religion to disabled individuals. She plans to pursue a psychology degree at St. Ambrose Univeristy to work with pediatrics and disabilities.

Andrew Martinez attends United Township High School and is the son of Anthony and Sherry Martinez, East Moline. He is a member of Student Council and Link Crew and eighth in a class of 372. He is cross country team captain, a four-year varsity letterman in swimming and track and holds school records and all-state honors. He is a National Honor Society member, volunteered on mission trips, has built Habitat for Humanity houses and volunteers at a support house for AIDS patients. He is active in church youth ministries.

Madison Logan attends Moline High School and is the daughter of Tim and Terry Logan, Moline. She is a National Honor Society member, editor of Line O' Type school newspaper, Key Club secretary, and Link Crew Leader. She is principal cellist in the symphonic orchestra and played in the Quad City Youth Symphony Orchestra. Madison is a 'VolunTeen' at Trinity West Hospital, a youth group leader, and a Student Food Drive participant. She plans to pursue a communications sciences and disorders degree to become a children's speech language pathologist and minor in music at Augustana College.

Grant Snyder attends Rock Island High School and is the son of William and Debbie Snyder, Rock Island. He is a four-year honor roll student, National Honor Society member, football and tennis team captain and Key Club member. He video recorded interviews with World War II Veterans as part of the AP American history project. He volunteered at Arrowhead Ranch and is a summer tennis instructor for children. He plans to attend a Division 1 University and major in political science and then pursue law school.
