Eleanor (Noxon) Schweizer, of Edwardsville, Illinois, died at 3:08 p.m. Friday, October 21, 2011, at home. She was 96 years old. The daughter of Elmer Warner and Eunice (Kelly) Noxon, Eleanor was born on March 10, 1915, in Buffalo, New York. She married Army Lt. Charles B. Schweizer on June, 7, 1941, at the Webster Groves Presbyterian Church, Webster Groves, Missouri, in a military ceremony. Preceding her in death were her parents and her brother, E. Warner Noxon. Besides her husband of 70 years, Eleanor is survived by one son, Charles W. (Maria) Schweizer of Camano Island, Washington, and two daughters, Anne (Bart) van Giessen of Mattawan, Michigan, and Elizabeth (Carl) Saunders of Spring Bay, Illinois. She is also survived by 9 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren, sister-in-law Joyce Noxon, and several cousins and nephews. She was a role model for all of her family.

After graduation from Kirkwood High School, Kirkwood, Missouri, Eleanor attended the University of Missouri at Columbia, graduating in 1936. After she was married, she created a loving home for her husband and family as they lived in many different homes, from Puerto Rico, Hanau, Germany and Orleans, France to Edwardsville, Illinois. She was a positive example for other military wives, serving in many leading roles in Officers’ Wives Clubs associations and hosting visitors from around the world. She ensured that whoever came as a guest left as a friend. Eleanor was a long-time member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, P.E.O. Chapter LX, the Mayflower Society, and Tri Delta Sorority. She was devoted to her husband and family, loved playing solitaire on the computer, and traveling to places as varied as Brazil, Indonesia, Japan, Egypt, South Africa, and many more. One of Eleanor’s special places was the Cayman Islands, where she and Charles enjoyed bird watching, collecting shells, and being warm during the cold Illinois winters!

Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 on Tuesday, October 25, 2011 at Weber & Rodney Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St, Edwardsville. Services will be at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 26, 2011 at St. Andrews Episcopal Church, 406 Hillsboro Ave., Edwardsville, Illinois, with Mother Virginia L. Bennett officiating. Private graveside services will be at Valhalla Cemetery in St. Louis. Memorials may be given to St. Andrews Episcopal Church at the above address or www.standrews-edwardsville.com or to the charity of your choice.
